Climate and Temperature

CLIMATE AND TEMPERATURE

Climate and temperature have profound effects and influence on our environment.  The survival, growth and progress of biotic (flora and fauna) factors largely depend on climate and temperature.  As beings who roam the earth, weather patterns also have socio-economic and cultural effects on us.

Anticipating weather conditions is important.  Man’s daily activities are dependent on climate and temperature.  Although climate change is a significant and lasting change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns over long periods of time (ranging from decades to millions of years), short-term weather patterns (yearly) are also useful in anticipating weather conditions.  This is particularly important in planning for livelihood activities.  Production runs and marketing schedules are usually set to conform to weather patterns.

Weather planning is more complicated in countries with four seasons although tropical countries also have to contend with changing weather conditions.  Under harsh climatic conditions (therefore, winter and rainy seasons) important human activities, especially food production, become harder.  Food production runs will have to be stepped-up during the friendlier seasons of the year.  Food supply chain is very critical to human survival.

Supply chain, however, is not confined to food and agricultural consumer products alone.  Most commodities and products are weather-sensitive.  Pharmaceutical companies, for example, could schedule their production runs and marketing strategies for cold and flu medicines to conform to expected periods of rain in the next year.  This will make their inventory management and supply chain more efficient.

Just my little thoughts…
