Musical Arrangement

MUSICAL ARRANGEMENT

More often, when reading musical pieces and literature, we come across these terms: “composed by”; “lyrics by”, “performed by”; and, “arranged by”.  In the world of music, an arrangement is a musical re-conceptualization of a previously composed musical piece.  It entails changes that may differ from the original work by means of re-harmonization, melodic paraphrasing, orchestration, or development of the formal structure.  Musical arrangements are all about this business of creating a new sound concept.

It is quite difficult to narrate the transition between an original composition to a re-arranged musical piece… so please allow me to present audio-video examples instead.  FIRST, a group known as the Indigo Girls came up with a beautiful song titled “Galileo”.  (For your listening and viewing pleasure, please click on this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h79Tw7SbuhA.)  Please note that this song was recorded by a 9-piece band.  I did an arrangement of this song using only an electric guitar using the “acoustic beat” style of guitar playing.  (To listen and view this cover, please click on this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhpO9CUy_BU.)

It is important to note that new arrangements must be able to present a new (even if not a totally different ) sound to accord the song a new sound concept.  My friends in the music industry who have seen the cover say that the purely guitar arrangement for this song is quite hard to accomplish and this song is indeed a new musical arrangement.

Just my little thoughts…
