No More Dumping of Canadian Garbage in the Philippines

This should be great news for us.  Why?... I’ll tell you at the end of this article.  But first, may I request that this researched news item be read?

“2 PINOYS SEEKING SEATS IN CANADA’S PARLIAMENT

Chicago – Two Filipinos are running for seats in the House of Commons of Canada’s Parliament when elections are called on Oct. 19.  They are Julius Tiangson and Jojo Quimpo.  Tiangson , a commerce graduate of Ateneo de Davao University, is running to be a member of parliament of the New Mississauga Centre Electoral District near Toronto.  He is a long-time Filipino community leader known for effective community organizing and advocacy for senior, youth, women and immigration issues.  If Tiangson wins, he will be the second Philippine-born member of parliament after Rey Pagtakhan, who served from 1988 to 2014.  Philippine-born Tobias Enverga Jr. was also named senator of Canada.  In his post, Quimpo said it will be a tough battle to enter parliament.  He is a legal professional with a degree in Political Science, Bachelor of Laws and paralegal diploma, who has worked as litigation paralegal for a major Canadian law firm.  Quimpo has organized events to promote and showcase Philippine culture.  He spearheads the Filipino-Canadian community’s participation in the yearly Santa Clause Parade and Canada Day Parade. --- Philstar.com”

So why is this great news for us Pinoys?  Well… if these Philippine-born Canadians are elected to the House of Commons of the Parliament of Canada, we will now (quite possibly) have allies in that parliament.  They could craft local laws that could compliment and strengthen the Basel Convention (an international treaty that bans transboarder movement of wastes especially from developed to developing countries).  I sincerely hope they get elected.  Hopefully, they could ensure that there will be no more dumping of Canadian garbage in the Philippines.
